About us

Lars-Erik Cederman was appointed full Professor of International Conflict Research at the department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (GESS) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETHZ) in 2003. His research team is part of the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS), which is jointly run by the ETH and the University of Zurich.

Our main focus is the study of international and domestic conflict using social-scientific theories and methodologies, with particular attention to the role played by macro-historical processes such as nationalism, democratization, state-formation, and disintegration in the emergence of political violence.

To trace such transformations, we rely on computational methods, notably agent-based modeling, as well as more conventional methods, such as statistics and qualitative, historical analysis.
