The GROWup data portal unites a number of datasets on ethnic groups and intrastate conflict from various sources in a single relational database. We currently offer three portals to access these data:
The GROWup Public Front-End visualizes a subset of the data, e.g. ethnic group's settlement patterns, ethnic power relations, terrain data, etc.
Access to the EPR Atlas offers detailed documentation of the data, including graphic presentation and explanations of the main coding decisions as well as references to the sources.
The GROWup Research Front-End allows to download customized datasets from our database in research-ready format, i.e., on the basis of country-year or group-year observations. An extensive documentation provides an overview of the variables provided via the RFE.
The Ethnic Power Relations (EPR) Dataset Family provides comprehensive coverage of ethnicity around the world, both in time and space, as described in Vogt, Bormann, Rüegger, Cederman, Hunziker, Girardin (2015). Some of the component datasets that serve as a basis for the GROWup database have been created fully or in part by members of the ICR group:
The EPR Core Dataset identifies all politically relevant ethnic groups and their level of access to state power for all countries of the world from 1946-2021. It is complemented by GeoEPR that adds geo-spatial information about each ethnic group and ACD2EPR that makes the linkage between conflict and ethnicity. Transnational ethnic groups that live in more than one state are put together in EPR-TEK and the ethnic composition of refugees is recorded in EPR-ER. Finally, the linguistic, religious, and racial cleavages that characterize and internally divide the politically relevant ethnic groups are enumerated in the EPR-ED dataset.
CShapes 2.0 has been extended with over 60 years of history about borders and capitals of independent states and dependent territories as described in Schvitz, Rüegger, Girardin, Cederman, Weidmann, Gleditsch (2021).
You can conveniently access the data by interactively visualizing CShapes or through its cshapes R package.
